The polariscope is a gemmological instrument with many rapid applications for gemstone testing. The polariscope can tell you whether a stone is optically isotropic or anisotropic, or a polycrystalline material like Jadeite Jade. With some applied knowledge and a conoscope rod, it may be possible to quickly identify typical strain patterns for certain materials like glass or synthetic spinel, or to see the different interference patterns seen in uniaxial vs biaxial materials – all of which contributes to the correct gemmological identification!
