Stones testers often work with either a thermal probe, an electrical probe, or both, and are primarily used to identify whether a gemstone is a diamond or another material. Testers can be used on loose or set gems, and are quick and reliable – an important part of a gemmologist’s arsenal. Gemstones other than diamond can be tested and identified but the results must be applied with the appropriate gemmological knowledge, as many other stones have overlapping ranges for conductivity.
